A higher price is not always a bigger truck. Here is what you are actually paying for.
1/10 and 1/14 only tell you how big the truck is. 1/10 is the normal park truck. 1/14 is the smaller one.
A Stampede is 16.25 inches long. A Gorgon is 16.57 inches. Both are 1/10. A Typhon Grom is 11.65 inches. That is a 1/14. The Hosim below is a 1/14 too.
The green Kraton is also a 1/10. It is just longer, at 21.54 inches. The huge Kratons called 6S and 8S (much stronger batteries) are a different, much bigger class. Not these.
Watch 1/10 next to a GromInches do not set the price. A Slash is 22.36 inches long and costs $259.95. The green Kraton is 21.54 inches long and costs $549.99.
The Kraton costs more than twice as much, and it is a little shorter than the Slash. Same kind of size. You are paying for a stronger motor and four-wheel drive, not a bigger truck.
Some boxes include a battery. Stampede and Gorgon do. You can drive those after a charge. Kraton and the $209.99 Grom do not. You still buy a battery and a charger for those.
Brushed means a milder motor. Brushless means a quicker motor. The S number is how strong the battery is. 2S is mild. 3S is quicker. 4S is the strongest of these.

Pavement manners in plain English: a Stampede is taller and more “crush/jump,” so it can tip on smooth asphalt when Teddy goes full send. A Slash sits lower and tracks better for sustained pavement laps, with less monster-truck personality on curbs and grass.

Cheapest serious 1/10 basher that still includes battery + charger and takes abuse. Great value if staying firmly under $200.

Swap at the park; keep driving while one charges. Traxxas 2923X or Spektrum SPMX33007C3H-style match.
Included chargers often need wall power. Traxxas 2912 or Spektrum SPMX-1027 / QC 18W+.
Traxxas kits don’t always include them; Arrma Gorgon does. NiMH AA set is fine.
Teddy will wrench. Optional spare arms/bumpers later (~$15-30).
Start on NiMH (safer, simpler charging) with Training Mode / throttle limit. Hold 2S LiPo until Teddy consistently drives in Training Mode and parents are ready for LiPo rules (proper charger or Smart charger, fire bag, no unsupervised charge).
High-value early prints: pit stand, tool organizers, battery tray inserts, TPU bumpers, skid/shock guards, temporary arms. Still buy gears, drivetrain, electronics, quality arms, and packs from OEM/aftermarket.
Buy the Traxxas Stampede 2WD XL-5 HD kit (~$230) if the goal is one car that survives Kinetic Park, teaches Teddy real RC mechanics, and stays easy on charging (NiMH).
Teddy already hangs around real hobby RTRs at Open Ride, so skip toy-grade. Day-one cart: car + 2nd battery + USB wall brick + AA cells. Prefer local Traxxas stocking so broken arms are a same-week fix.
Stretch to Slash 2WD (~$260) if Open Ride days feel more like racing on asphalt than jumping curbs, and you want the deepest aftermarket plus printable SCT library. The printer edge alone is not enough to abandon Stampede.
Save with Gorgon (~$190) only if budget must stay under $200. Still a real hobby truck; slightly thinner aftermarket, body armor, and print ecosystem.
